Air Duct Cleaning - An Overview

It is very important to clean your entire air conditioning or heating system. Many air duct cleaners only clean the vents and registers and possibly the ducts. The entire duct system should be cleaned, not just the easy to reach areas. The mechanical parts of your system (the fans, housing, coils, etc.) should be cleaned too. Any area of a system can become dirty or contaminated. All areas should be cleaned simultaneously because a part that isn’t cleaned can re-contaminate the clean components.

Air Duct Cleaning Scams

The air duct cleaning industry has gotten a bit a bad rap and probably deservedly so. However, the source of the bad rap can be traced to a small percentage of air duct cleaners who use deceptive advertising and even worse duct cleaning techniques.

These air duct cleaners have garnered the name "Blow and Go" because they show up at a home and stick a vacuum hose into some air vent and leave. This is does basically nothing to clean air ducts to the point of the home owner actually getting a benefit from it. The flip side is that blow and go air duct cleaners often charge very little (which why people call them) so the home owner got about what they paid for.

You have probably seen some of the many advertisements on TV, newspaper inserts, coupons or fliers in the mail or on the radio. Many of these ads promote “specials "and quote a flat price for a house or a flat rate per room. These are the air duct cleaners to be leery of.

It is virtually impossible to quote a price for air duct cleaning without first inspecting the home. Air duct cleaning cost depends on a lot of factors including the size of the home, the home's layout, how accessible the ductwork is, the complexity of the HVAC system (# of units, does it have a return duct system) and most importantly the condition of the ducts themselves.

Generally, the air duct cleaners that promote a "one price fits all" special will either try to up sell the customer or will not clean the entire system. The best advice is to get several quotes and check references. If a particular quote is much lower than other quotes be sure to ask that air duct cleaner what exactly he will do for that price and how he will do it.

Air Duct Cleaning Cost

As mentioned above, the cost or air duct cleaning varies depending on a number of factors but generally costs from $450 to $1,000. This does not include removing and treating any mold that is found air ducts of the HVAC system.
